Meeting Architect Barbie

What a surprise to walk through the stands of a fair and be in front of a colleague whom I had heard so much about: Architect Barbie!

Che sorpresa passeggiare tra gli stand di una fiera e trovarsi di fronte una collega di cui avevo tanto sentito parlare: Barbie Architetto!

And to think that if I look around I’m surrounded by girls who want to look like Barbie at all costs, while Barbie has chosen to be…. an architect! Light years away from our Paleolithic Peach Blossom and Star Light Barbie,  “I can be” Barbie has very clear ideas about her professional life: in fact, the friends of my colleague are miniature Journalist Barbie, Paleontologist Barbie, Pediatrician Barbie, Computer Engineer Barbie…

E pensare che se mi guardo intorno sono accerchiata da ragazze che vogliono sembrare Barbie a tutti costi, mentre Barbie ha scelto di essere…architetto! Lontane anni luce dalle nostre paleolitiche Barbie Fior di Pesco e Luce di Stelle, le Barbie della serie “I can be” hanno le idee molto chiare sulla loro vita professionale: infatti le amiche della mia collega in miniatura sono Barbie Giornalista, Barbie Esploratrice di Marte, Barbie Paleontologa, Barbie Pediatra, Barbie Ingegnere Informatico…

Luckily the old style Barbie hasn’t died out and you can still see some Dancer Barbie, Bride Barbie and Teacher Barbie  (school and yoga one!).

Just a shame  that I haven’t had time to ask Barbie one important thing: “But really you go dressed like that in a construction site?”

Barbie remains a timeless myth that fascinates babies, girls and women of all professions. I still remember the disappointment of not being allowed to participate in the contest “The AIA Barbie ® Dream House ™ Design Competition” organized by the American Institute of Architecture a couple of years ago, where architects – American AIA members vied for the best project of a fantastic house for Barbie, obviously in Malibu! Here is the winning design:

Per fortuna le Barbie old style non si sono estinte del tutto ed è possibile ancora scorgere nella stessa serie qualche Barbie Ballerina, Barbie Sposa e Barbie Insegnante (quella di scuola e quella di yoga!)

Peccato solo che io non abbia fatto in tempo a chiedere a Barbie una cosa importante: “Ma davvero in cantiere ci vai vestita così?”

Barbie resta un mito senza tempo che affascina bambine, ragazze e donne di tutte le professioni. Ricordo ancora la delusione per il non poter partecipare al concorso “The AIA Barbie® Dream House™ Design Competition” indetto dall’American Institute of Architecture un paio di anni fa, in cui gli architetti – americani iscritti all’AIA gareggiavano per il miglior progetto di una fantastica dimora per Barbie, a Malibù ovviamente! Ecco il disegno vincitore:

Now, however, I can console myself in part thanks to the opening of the new Dream House in Berlin but for me it deserve a separate post. And don’t hold against me the feminists who took to the field to protest its opening!

Adesso però potrò in parte consolarmi grazie alla nuova casa dei sogni di Berlino che però per me merita un post a parte. E non me ne vogliano le femministe che sono scese in campo per protestare contro la sua apertura!
